Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Keepers retainers.

Both. It is a single, custom-made device that works as a night guard (protects your teeth from grinding wear) and as a retainer (holds your teeth in their current position). It is a thin, hard device worn at night.
The choice is completely yours. We often recommend both: it gives longer-lasting protection, and it also prevents the natural shifting of teeth that happens over time.
Yes. If one is lost or breaks you have another to wear right away, and a spare added during the same order comes at a reduced price, which lowers what you pay for each one. Better peace of mind and a better price per device.
No. A Keepers retainer is a passive appliance: it holds your teeth where they already are, it is not orthodontic treatment, and it does not straighten teeth. If your teeth have shifted very slightly, wearing it again can settle them back, but it is not designed to move teeth and cannot do more than that. To actively move your teeth, contact an orthodontist.
We provide custom-made removable retainers. We do not maintain, remove, or replace a fixed (bonded) retainer wire. What we can do: we can provide a removable retainer that sits alongside your fixed one, so you have a backup ready if the fixed one ever breaks. If you later switch to the removable, your dentist removes the old fixed wire.
No. If you already have a usable 3D scan, no clinic visit is needed: you send it to Keepers Club, and our orthodontist reviews and approves its suitability before it's made. If you don't have a scan yet, you can get one at a clinic, or ask your clinic to send you a file they already have.
Two ways. If you have had braces or aligners, your orthodontist almost certainly took a 3D scan at the end of your treatment and still has the file. Under GDPR it is your data, so you can ask them for a copy and email it to us. If you do not have one, most dental practices can scan you. Not every practice offers a scan on its own and prices vary, so if one says no, it is worth asking another.
A 3D scan is a digital impression of your teeth. It is taken with a small special camera that builds a digital set of images, and it replaces the old-school impressions. There is no radiation, and that digital model is what your retainer or night guard is made from.
No. An X-ray or a CBCT is a different type of 3D imaging: it shows the roots, the bone around them and other structures inside your jaw, and it does use radiation. That is not needed for a retainer or night guard. Either one is made from the shape of your teeth, which is what a 3D scan captures.
We can accept and process any open 3D object file. That covers the common intraoral scan exports such as STL, PLY, and OBJ, and you can send them packed in an archive like ZIP or RAR. If you're not sure whether your file will work, send it over and we'll review it.
You'll send the 3D scan file to our email address.
A retainer is made to your teeth as they were in the scan. If your teeth have shifted only very slightly, it can often still fit, and the snug fit may help keep them in place. If they've moved more, it may feel too tight or not fit, and it isn't designed to move teeth back. Rule of thumb: if you've noticed a clear change in how your teeth sit, it's safer to send a fresh scan.
Your Keepers retainer or night guard is custom-made from your 3D scan by our certified partner manufacturer, using medical-grade materials that are BPA-free and hypoallergenic. Before production, a certified orthodontist reviews your scan and approves it as suitable.
After your scan is approved, production takes about 3 business days. The retainer or night guard is then shipped, and most orders arrive within about 6 to 10 business days. Delivery time depends on your location.
You pay only after your scan is approved for production and we confirm your order. You're not charged for a scan that can't be used.
You receive your custom retainer or night guard, a protective case, and instructions for use.
In the unlikely case your retainer or night guard doesn't fit, we'll have it remade, or fully refund you if that's not possible. Our fit guarantee covers anything made from a scan we've reviewed and approved as suitable.
On average we recommend replacing them every 6 to 12 months. For some people they last less, and for others a device can last well over two years. It depends on how you care for it, how severe any grinding is, jaw muscle activity and teeth anatomy. As a general rule, replacing them within 6 to 12 months keeps them robust and stable, the protection at its best and hygiene under control: over time the plastic wears and its integrity can reduce, even while it still serves its purpose.
